Maybe you’ve heard of Ryan Reynolds? He’s this actor that was in a few movies you might have seen. Deadpool. Pokémon Detective Pikachu. The Proposal.
Did you also know that Reynolds owns a wireless company? That’s right: Mint Mobile. The company said that they passed on the chance to air a Super Bowl commercial this year, saving millions of dollars. With the money savings, they decided to increase the data limits on all their cell phone plans — at no extra charge to their customers.
“We prefer to invest our money in stuff for you,” said Reynolds in a Tweet announcing the new data limits.
The company offers four low-cost, no-contract cell phone plans. All of their plans include unlimited talk and text, free calls to Mexico and Canada, and Wi-Fi calls and text. Three of Mint Mobile’s cell phone plans have a data limit, but effective Jan. 28, 2021, those limits have been upped.
The 3GB monthly data plan was bumped to 4GB; 8GB plan to 10GB; and 12GB plan to 15GB. More data with no extra charge to customers. The fourth Mint cell phone plan offers unlimited data and remains $30 a month.
With a prepaid cell phone plan, you make a monthly payment to the phone carrier at the beginning of the billing cycle rather than at the end. Major carriers like AT&T and Verizon offer prepaid options, but they typically have a slightly higher price tag on their plans. To save more money on your cell phone bill, check out other carriers like Mint Mobile, Cricket, Ting or Consumer Cellular. These carriers offer lower cost plans with the same features such as unlimited talk and text.
These value carriers don't own the physical communications network their customers use. Instead, they lease the communications equipment from the larger companies like AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.
Mint Mobile operates on the T-Mobile network.
Yes, Reynolds purchased a stake in ownership in the wireless company back in November 2019.
With no physical stores to maintain and drive up costs, Mint Mobile can pass on these savings to customers. They’re a totally digital provider, but do have customer service representatives available to chat on the phone or online.
A prepaid cell phone plan has several benefits. In addition to the lower monthly costs, there are typically no contracts or credit checks.
