If you’re the proud owner of a Ford full-size pickup truck, be sure to lock your doors. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) released their annual “Hot Wheels” report naming the Ford pickup truck the most stolen vehicle in the country, up from the No. 3 spot in last year’s list. In particular, the 2006 model year trucks were the most stolen.

The NICB also broke down vehicle thefts by state. The Ford truck topped the most stolen list in 19 states: Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

New to the list this year and taking the No. 10 spot is the Honda CR-V with 10,094 reported stolen. Also returning to the list from last year are the Honda Civic (No. 2) and Honda Accord (No. 4).

Fortunately, car thefts have been down for the second year in a row. Still, there were almost 800,000 stolen vehicles reported in 2019, compared to 819,988 in 2018 and 833,740 in 2017.

The top 10

The NICB annual report looks at data submitted by law enforcement to determine the most popular vehicle make, model and year that car thieves loved most in 2019.

What to do if your car is stolen

If your car is stolen, call the police right away to file a stolen vehicle report. You’ll want to give them your car’s make, model, year, license plate number and any other descriptive information that could be useful.

Once you’ve filed a police report, you’ll need to contact your auto insurance company to submit a claim. Even if you’re not sure whether your insurance coverage includes theft, it’s a good idea to notify them anyway. If you need a rental car, you can work with your auto insurer on this as well.

Does car insurance cover theft?

Having the right auto insurance coverage is important. Comprehensive insurance coverage will protect you if your car is stolen. Comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car that results from something other than a collision. For example, comprehensive coverage insures you against fire, vandalism, wind and hail, falling objects as well as theft.

However, if your car is stolen, comprehensive insurance doesn’t cover any personal belongings left in your car.
